If your home décor is beginning to look a little frazzled, then here are seven tips to give a room a quick makeover without breaking the family budget.  Not all home decorating projects have to mean hiring a contractor and knocking down walls.  It is simple to accomplish these seven tips within a few days and revitalize a lifeless, dull room.

1. Clean

If you have a family, you probably have magazines, books, toys and games lying around the space and take away from the personality of your room.  Find or create new storage spaces for these items, such as decorative baskets or bins.  Give your draperies and upholstered furnishings a full cleaning.  Remove all your decorative collectibles and thoroughly clean each one.  This is your first step for the space to start fresh.

2. Establish a Focal Point

If your room lacks a focal point, consider painting a wall in a different, but coordinating color that complements the rest of your room and furnishings.  The newly painted wall will quickly become the center of attention in the room.  Use interesting art work or a large ornately framed mirror to decorate the wall. Complete the look by placing a favorite piece of furniture against the new focal point wall.  A simple change of color can make a significant difference in your room.

3. Rearrange the Furniture

Pull the furniture away from the walls, no matter the size of your room.  Create an intimate conversation area by positioning your furniture at interesting angles. If your room is small, try positioning the sofa diagonally to make it appear more spacious. Switch out decorative accents for the different seasons, Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. This can dramatically change the look and feel of the room.

4. Reposition the rug

If you have an area rug, use it to define your newly arranged space by turning it on an angle.  Try layering a complementary area rug, if you have carpeting that runs from wall to wall.  To prevent someone from tripping over the edges of the rug, use carpet-to-carpet tape to hold the area rug in place.

5. Add Greenery

Bring new life to your room by adding healthy green plants.  Use plants of different heights and species to create interest.  Use floor plants in corners to fill in empty space. Keep your plants in good health and well-trimmed.  If you have poor lighting, consider using good-quality faux greenery, which may be a safer choice if you have small children or pets.

6. New Lamps

Tired old lamps can make your room look outdated and stale and give the room a dated overall look.  Find lamps that are unique, intriguing, make a bold statement and fit the personality of your room.

7. Showcase Your Personality

Place interesting artwork, mirrors, or architectural pieces that reflect your personality on display.  Refresh your sofa and chairs with decorative pillows and throws.  This is a simple way to add color and texture to your room.

Create vignettes using your freshly cleaned collectibles.  Arrange them in odd numbers with varying heights.  To change the heights, use hardbound books in stacks or decorative boxes.  Add drama and warmth by incorporating candlelight.  Lastly, add something unexpected just for fun.

With a little imagination and creativity, you can transform your worn-out home decor into a fresh, exciting new space.  Refresh your enthusiasm for decorating your home - one room at a time!
